Embracing the Notions of Change-Two Major Teams Join Forces

Miami, FL-May 2009-The Miami-Broward One Carnival Host Committee will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Miami Carnival on Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Bicentennial Park in Miami, Fl. After six years of having two Caribbean Carnivals on the same day in South Florida, both Miami Carnival Inc. (MCI) and Broward Caribbean Carnival Inc. (BCCI) have signed an agreement to implement the One Carnival Host Committee Initiative. This spirited collaboration serves as the foundation of a united Carnival celebration in South Florida. This agreement was signed on May 11, 2009 by Ruthven William (Chairman/Founding Member of MCI) and Mario Zamora (Director/Founding Member of BCCI).

In past years, both Miami and Broward Caribbean Carnivals have had a significant impact on tourism in South Florida. Each of the Carnivals has attracted over 100,000 people to the area. The impact of this union promises to create an even greater impact on the economy while providing an opportunity for masqueraders, bandleaders, sponsors and promoters. With the support of various civic leaders and municipalities, both Miami and Broward Caribbean Carnival committee members are committed to embracing the spirit of a common ground as it relates to Carnival.

“We have combined our diverse strengths and resources to create a brand that will provide a tremendous social and economic value to the South Florida area. This is an opportunity for us to elevate Carnival to a new level”, stated Ruthven Williams (Chairman/Founding Member of MCI).

“The Miami-Broward One Carnival Host Committee is committed to this one Carnival movement that promises to have a major impact on the entire South Florida economy”, stated Mario Zamora(Director/Founding Member of BCCI).

“The Caribbean-American community is one of the fastest growing immigrant communities in South Florida. This One Carnival initiative will bolster the community’s continued development in making more significant contributions to the growth and quality of life in South Florida”, stated Marlon A. Hill, Esq., legal counsel to the One Carnival Host Committee initiative.

“The South Florida economy benefits from the richness and diversity of our cultural traditions. We are extremely pleased that County government could play a role in unifying the history, community traditions, resources, and energy of Miami Carnival and Broward Caribbean Carnival. The community at large will benefit from this cultural “Superbowl” stated Commissioner Barbara Jordan, Miami-Dade Commissioner, District 1.

Miami AND Broward Carnival 2009


Its Not a Rumor...its for Real! 2009 Carnival in Florida is a Joint One. Both Associations Broward Carnival and Miami Carnival are presenting ONE EVENT in Bicentennial Park on the SAME DAY! One Carnival!.

I can only imagine that connections are fragile and sensitive even as we speak, but I hope in the end , for this 25th Anniversary, we can in fact really have One Carnival. A true celebration without the seperation.:)

And for those that think Carnival not in people heads already....the bacchanal that is carnival has started already. 

Mas Designers bouncing up on each other on the street in the their sourcing locations and checking to see who buying what. Right Nicky??? loool.  The greetings are genuine, the curiousity is PALPABLE....and all it does is build the drive to DO Better, to BE Better.

This Joint carnival also means that the commpetition is larger. Personally I love it. It makes the challenge even more exciting. With previous bands in the Miami Parade you kind of knew what the limits and standard of the existing bands are. Now...we have Wild cards. I LOVE it. The Pressure is on...

The Process 2009

Like I announced before..my Band Vibrationz will be presenting Vegas Nights as our presentation for Miami Carnival.

As Creative Director [gulp] for the band..it means that even now we are in full planning stages. A quick trip to New York last week for materials/samples was one of our first moves...and the process has begun.

In Miami you would be hard pressed to charge the prices generally quoted for Trinidad carnival..or even for Labor Day in New York. So our constant challenge is to do creative designs on a limited budget.

Our premise at Vibrationz is that we want to deliver a quality costume, gorgeous...as close to Trinidad Standards as our budgets will allow. Placing fourth in last years carnival does not deliver a large financial windfall...so our challenge is always budget.

My challenge is always the balance of creativity vs budget..a challenge that makes for constant barter with vendors and creative means to come up with distinctive designs...

Right now ..we're in the midst of designing prototypes. And LORD..my head is spinning..because as much as I want spectacular design elements...staying within budget and having distinctive costumes is driving me up a wall. I sometimes wish that we had the benefit of Large sponsors like some of the more established bands...but i think the challenge is what keeps up sharp.

Jamaicans have a saying..Likkle but they talawah....I kinda think that's what Vibrationzz is. At least right now. We may not have the benefit of large sponsors but we try sooo hard to make our masqueraders happy that i believe that's one of the reasons they keep coming back. Our team is selfless, and focused on a true carnival experience even outside of profit....so we continue.

And now my dreams are filled with braid and feathers, of color swatches and applique..of converting visions in my head to reality on a mannequin and eventually to models and costumes on the road.
