Generation X Review #2

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 Drunk or Sober Mind yuh Bizness 2 Comments

My friend and I have been going to Miami Carnival for the past few yrs. and decided this time we would play mas. We chose Generation X because we heard good things about them in the past, and the costumes this year were beautiful and affordable.
We were in Avalanche. Our section was handled by a separate group, Trinijah Entertainment.  We chose it because we never had costumes that color before and the section leaders were the only ones ready in July to take registration using a secure website. (Generation X website wasn’t up until mid-August I believe. Prior to that they wanted us to give all our card information over the phone to register for the 8 sections they actually handled, which we were not going to do for security reasons.)
The people behind Trinijah Entertainment, Remmie and Kandice Hunte, were great. They kept us informed from registration to pick up. They were fun and professional. Our pick up options were from Thursday to Saturday, anytime. My friend and I landed around noon on Thursday and went straight to get our costumes. We were in and out in 10 minutes. We LOVED our costumes! They also gave us wine samples, sunglasses, glitter, and water bottles.
We got to the stadium at noon, went straight to get a drink (no premium liquor, but I stuck with Appleton for the day). Every time we went for a drink it was available. I used all but one of my drink tickets.  It was raining, but we still had a time! The music was good. I wish they would have had ppl on top the truck hyping us up more, but it was fine. Vibes was great, everybody winein on everybody, lmao. Around 3pm, we got food. It was chicken, salad, and lo mein...no problem for us.
We crossed the stage a little after 7. It was soooo fun! I had a great time with this band.

I’ve read and heard horror stories from other people and it really shocked me. I feel like we played in two separate bands because of the extreme differences in experience. I think my friend and I benefitted from registering with the group that handled their section independently from GenX. I would play with them again, but after hearing those disappointing stories, it would have to be with an independent group whose only focus is on one section.

Generation X Issues an Apology to their Masqueraders

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 Drunk or Sober Mind yuh Bizness 0 Comments

October 9, 2012

To our Masqueraders,

For the past twelve years Generation X has strived to give our Masqueraders the best experience possible while participating in the Miami-Broward Carnival. From the third year of existence our band has been the largest participant in Carnival, growing each year to our current high.  Our growth from 1,000 last year to 1,500 this year (50%) was a bit too much all at once.

We always pride ourselves on good customer service and giving value for money, but unfortunately this year we fell short on many levels and would like to extend our sincerest, most heartfelt apologies to all.
There were challenges this year because of this rapid growth and the manufacturer of our special orders (Whole-pieces, Monokinis, Bustiers & Wire Bras) was a big disappointment, but we take full responsibility and will rectify.  Many masqueraders did not come on their scheduled costume pick-up day, but waited until Friday and Saturday when other sections were scheduled which compounded the delay.  This, combined with the late arrival of the remaining male costumes caused a huge backup at Mas Camp which we were unprepared for.

On the road we tried to ensure an extra enjoyable experience, but again fell short as our liquor truck was unable to handle the constant flow of revelers even though we had 80 feet of bar and eighteen staff on that truck. Our food truck fell prey to hot temperatures and a long three hour wait before the start of the parade which resulted in spoilt food (rice) which had to be dumped (this was also the case with four other bands). Once again, we offer our sincerest apologies.

Gen X has been around for thirteen years and never before experienced these problems. Whether it was those who stood in long lines at Mas Camp, returned more than once to pick up costumes, or may not have been able to get their costumes, the ball was dropped and no amount of apology will negate that experience now.  We ask for your patience as we investigate and satisfy all complaints and will get back to each masquerader individually who was affected adversely and make it right. Again, our sincere apologies, this will not happen again.

The Gen X family will be stepping back and taking a long, hard look at all aspects of our band with an eye towards a complete overhaul of procedures and an evaluation of where we go from here.

We thank you for choosing to play mas with us this year and wish to apologize once again for any adverse experience that may have affected you.  We also thank you for joining us on the road and leading us to honors as Generation X was again named Band of the Year and Best Music on the Road.

Sincerely,

Generation X Committee

Generation X Review

Tuesday, October 16, 2012 Drunk or Sober Mind yuh Bizness 1 Comments

Costume Collection-

Generation X costume collection will probably go down in history as the worst costume collection in Miami Broward Carnival history. Up to this day, October. 16th, 2012 ( 9 days after carnival) some people still have NOT received their costumes yet but they paid their balance and was not told the costume was not “ready” for collection. The place they had costume collection was as big as a walk in closet for the 1,000 plus masqueraders to pick up. They had the nerve to have a sign in sheet but being that everyone could not fit in the closet, they did not have a speaker system to announce names so if the person was outside, their name was simply crossed off the list and the next person was called. This to me was completely absurd and ridiculous.
Nevertheless, I was in “Wildfire” and came at my correct time and day for pick up. Me and my friend waited 3 hours before we were called off the “list” and allowed to get our costumes only to be told we had to come back tomorrow for the rest of our; “special orders” (wire bras and one piece). My section leader never specified this in our email (I have a copy of the email attached).

“Hello Masqueraders!!!!
We are a week away from Carnival day!!! Ready or notCostume Pick-upFor those who have not seen the information on our website. Wildfire section is scheduled for pick up on Friday, October 5th 5pm-10pm. Mas Camp address:
7640 NW 25th streetUnit 103Miami, FL 33122
Please come with your paypal receipt in hand and cash if you have an outstanding balance. I will be accepting balance payment online up until midnight tonight. Make a request (via website), so an invoice can be sent. Payment must be received before midnight. If you have never played mas before, the mas camp can be very busy. So please bare with us during this time of bacchanal :) See you soon!! Kimone”

I was extremely upset that I am missing a party that I already paid for only to be told thanks for waiting now come back and wait some more tomorrow. I was not having it so they signed off a paper saying that we would not have to wait in line just come straight to the back and they will take care of me Saturday. The next day I had reluctantly left Red Eye early to go back to the camp to see the line is now WRAPPED around the building and is filled with angry masqueraders. I walked straight in (as instructed by Vanessa ) and still ended up waiting another hour only to be given 2 wire bras that were missing 9 jewels and was told they did not have the one piece ready and all they can do is give my friend back $25  or a plain top to “bedazzle” herself. She was in complete shock and became filled with anger because they took the rest of her money ($150) knowing they had nothing for her. When I spoke to another employee, Shiona; she told me I need to go and search for as well as PAY FOR a glue gun, glue sticks, jewels and some beads. I explained to her that in all they received over $1,000 between me and 2 of my friends and all I keep getting from Generation X is rude, sarcastic, insincere, and unmannerly employees but all I want is the 3 costumes we PAID in FULL for. She said all they can do is give me a tank top to dress up myself or give me the one piece on the road Sunday and she will PERSONALLY do it herself. The room was filled of people listening to her and told me to get a paper with her signing it saying that the costume will be at the road. She said she is not signing anything and I will have to take her word. I asked her what she will be wearing on the road tomorrow and she said “exactly what I have on today..this same white shirt and this same pair of jeans” in a disgusting tone. We obliged and left.

The next day aka day 3 aka CARNIVAL DAY, we get to the road and I found Shiona on the drink truck (in a different outfit) First she ignored me and my friend, then when I  finally spoke to her she said where were we at 9am??, I told her exactly where we was suppose to be, getting our make up done. She said we need to find “Charmaine” she has the costume. We asked who is she because we have no idea how she looks. She said “Fine!! I’ll get her myself” we waited 30 minutes and watched her continuing serving drinks. Again my friend asked “can I please get my costume” and Shiona yelled “WAIT!”. After another1 hour we realize she has no intentions of leaving the truck or giving my friend her costume. My friend is miserable, upset and crying. Other masqueraders saw what’s happening and start telling us that there’s numerous other people with half of their costumes and was told to decorate theirs and other wire bras were also falling apart. They told us to find a committee member who are in white shirts and ask them to help us. When we located a committee member  they said they couldn’t help us. My friend played mas in this:

Security:

The road had absolutely no security. The band was FULL of stormers. The little security they did have was guarding the DRINK truck.

Food and Drink:

I had 2 drinks the whole day because I was either being told “No drinks right now” or “wait’…or simply ignored.  The food was COLD and the lo-mein tasted sour...SPOILED!!!!!

Music:

The same 9 songs were played over and over again. I have a 30 minute video that has 4 songs played twice and  2 songs played THREE times

Route:

Keeping the parade in the stadium was a horrible idea. It took a lot away from carnival in my opinion. Instead of introducing people to our culture, the only people that paid to came in were the ones who already knew about our culture.  Space was limited on the road to display big costumes and it was a “stormerfest”  the whole time I think because of this as well as the inadequate security provided by Generation X.

People:

The masqueraders call themselvesGeneration Vex…I call it Generation Next because I’m on to the next one. You would have to be a fool to play with Generation X again next year or ever again after how they treated the masqueradors this year. And I really enjoyed the performance on the truck…oh…that’s right…there was none..smh

Sincerely,
The whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God

Miami Broward Carnival Band Launch and IslandsUnited

Friday, September 14, 2012 Drunk or Sober Mind yuh Bizness 0 Comments

I attended the launch at Hialeah on Saturday and I think it finally made me be a bit more excited about being on the road come October 7th.

I got there at about 9pm due to the rain delaying me a bit and was a bit concerned about missing some aspects of the launch, but when I drove in I realised that things had not yet picked up really at that time. People were still streaming in, bands were doing final touches on their tents. The atmosphere though was full of excitement. The Dj's and pan side added to vibe that everybody who came in seem to be looking for. As usual at MBOC events there is quite a mix of age groups.

Adult bands were carded to present at 12am. A few hours prior to that kiddies bands made their presentation. It was an indescribable feeling to be upstairs where the adult bands were getting ready. Though people were very much staying in their camp to prepare, you can easily see the "sizing up" of costumes going on. It was a requirement for ALL bands participating in this year's parade to be there. It was quite entertaining seeing the presentation of all bands and it can easily be said there is a band out there for everyone.

While watching the presentations I was accosted approached by one of the promoters of Islands United. Apparently my review of Kes the Band/Generation X's launch didn't sit too well with them, and well he, along with the managers of Hialeah Park whose names have slipped me now, were adamant on addressing the issues from that event to ensure that their next events really give patrons what they want.

IslandsUnited has promised to bring you a STELLAR VIP experience at their next events for miami carnival happening at Hialeah Park. For those VIP people there is promise of a huge stage, with better access to viewing the stage for the VIP ticket holders. There is going to be a huge tent which will contain areas for patrons to lounge when they get tired from all the jumping and waving. VIP ticket holders will also get food (I probably added in that last part so please don't hang me if no food is provided lmao). Additionally there is a huge promise of better signage so that patrons do not have to be wondering around like lost sheep to find their designated area.

So for those heading to Girl Power/Rave and doing VIP, you can now expect a lot more than I got based on the last review. And if you don't... just let me know!! :)

Allyuh can't say I never do nothing for allyuh.. lol

Get in yuh band - J'ouvert!!!

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 Drunk or Sober Mind yuh Bizness 0 Comments

I've always been asking why we don't have any real j'ouvert like celebrations in Miami for Carnival. I never thought it was so difficult to find a venue early in the morning to have people in mud and trucks and have a proper j'ouvertesque experience during carnival celebrations. And as I always remember the response being, "that wouldn't work here". Well Ha! I am quite excited to announce that for the first time (that I know of) there is going to be a J'ouvert for Miami Broward carnival at Broward regional park (ideal venue IMO) from 7am to 1pm (kinda starting late but I am probably asking for too much here.

At first I was saying it was probably just going to be more partyish than anything else. But then I see bands calling for people to register with them to be a part of their j'ouvert band

So find yuh band and get ready for the mud, paint and jammings!!

So so many opportunities for wutlessness this year!!
