Costume Boots DIY!! Dont be Scurred

Saturday, September 18, 2010 clivia 1 Comments

So youve bought your costume...and now youre doing the accessories, make up decision thing.
And this year...you think hmmm....im gonna step out of my comfort zone and wear some boots.
Cool GO FOR IT!!
I've worn boots for Miami every year but one. and Heels too..Yeah Heels. Its Miami though ...not Trinidad.
But when you wear a boot you're wondering what to do with your ankle/knee/thigh pieces.
Simple... you do some at home DIY!

If you have an ankle piece that should be worn low on the foot but your boot is a shin tall or knee tall one... Here's my suggestion.

If you're okay with gluing directly on the boot, you remove the piece from the base and glue it over the top of the boot, down the side..wherever you think it would look good. Consider this your chance to do your individual take. The colors and design are consistent with the section already...so go crazy and stick it wherever you feel.

See? Top of the boots is the leg piece...and these DIVAS..lol...are wearing one of their leg pieces as an adapted Head Piece!

When you get the piece try to detach it fron whatever binding it on. Most times its an elastic strap or maybe a cording. Try to remove it as cleanly as possible. Here's where the DIY comes in. Depending on the size of the piece you can glue it directly on to your boot.

Now if your boot is one that you dont want to damage. You can go to any craft store Michaels, even Walmart and  pick up Brooch Findings
These are flat base metallic pieces with a safety pin attached. They come in various sizes, and in my neighborhood I've even see them with a circular flat base attached . You can also find these at bead stores, and beading supplies stores
You attach the piece to this with glue...and  depending on the size you can use one or three pins..enough so that they feel secure.I woud suggest hot glue to attach the pieces to achieve a secure bond. Then you pin the completed piece through the fabric of the boot.

After you pin this through you can attach felt or tape on the inside of the boot to cover the pinned back to prevent irritation on your own foot and to further secure it. In essence what you now have is a removable ankle piece or leg piece that you can put through your boot and place wherever you need it.

I would further suggest that you test the piece to ensure that its as secure as you need it in term of weight and you can then use additional pins, safety or otherwise.

I would also think about investing in these.
Hem Gems

These are little pins...flat on the front...with an secure attachement on the back...think..flat earrings with a secure back...that you can pin through the fabric of your leg / ankle piece, then through the boot, then secure on the inside. You can buy these online here.

I fully intend to do this myself with pics soon. When I do I will be sure to post them. Since most people don't get their costumes till a few days before the road, if you're going to do this I suggest you get your materials before hand so when you do get your pieces all that will be left to do is the glueing and placement.

Good luck peoples...

See you on the road!

Lest we forget!!

Friday, September 17, 2010 clivia 3 Comments

So the season is here....for those that did Labor Day...it BEEN here...and for other its Miami and the ultimate Trinidad.
And we are bombarded by these perfect body images of models in the gorgeous, beautiful, vomit provoking, out of body experience creating costumes that we MUST wear.
And so we begin the ritual - of eating less, and working out more....to achieve this ideal YOU for the road.
Master Cleanse recipes abound, Socacize in full gear...and instead of eating that steak you been dying for all week...you're munching on tilapia and broccoli.
Ain't a damn thing wrong with that. Effort and reward...
BUT.....
Let me just say this..

Lest we forget....
The Instant you step on the road..
and you transform from the 9-5 drudgery of your day to day existence..
The Minute...
you transform...
into the entity that is your costume...
the minute the sun hits your face....
the drink in your cup ....
and your surrounded by the VERY people you would want with you on a deserted island..
The minute the bess man next to you decide to take a small wine..on the bumper he been eyeing since you hit the road...
and your song come on...whatever it is....YOUR SONG comes on on the bumping system....

WHO THE HELL CARES????!!!!

dais all..

Di Jumbie....

Friday, August 27, 2010 clivia 1 Comments

So....I said before that I was taking a break from Carnival this year. I really thought I would miss it.
And to be truthful in some ways...im still involved. Im doing makeup for bands.
Im supporting a friend who has a section with a band here. And for once....for ONCE in so many years that I can remember ....instead of looking forward to the season with dread....of the work..and the politics and the long nights and the personal sacrifice....and the glue burns...and wire scratches and depleted pockets and short tempers and hidden angers...and frustrated tears.....
For ONCE...I am excited about Miami Carnival....I'm looking forward to palaving with my sister and my friends. To have the responsiblity of enjoying myself....still looking out for my people...but the burden is not all mine and I can look forward to a mind free of covering all the bases..Is everything as it should be.? Did we do this? Did we remember that?
I can enjoy the ritual of preparing for the parade. I can actually wear a costume...not the left overs of what ever wasnt sold. I can be ...a Masquerader. The Jumbie bite Meh! -Disclaimer-

Pics...Band Launches 2010

Tuesday, August 24, 2010 Unknown 0 Comments

So last weekend , there were three band launches....on Friday Carnival Nationz Miami., Saturday : Generation X Miami , and Sunday Party People Mas.

I had big plans to go to all of them...FAIL. I made it Friday, couldnt make it Saturday and since I was hired to do makeup for them, made it on SUnday.

This weekend really made it seem like the season is finally in full swing. All the costumes showed amazing potential, and the bands are making huge efforts in term of presentation. I was happily impressed.

Here are a few pics of the Costumes and Bands..

Finally - A Launch Date- No Road. We chipping in the Stadium

Monday, August 16, 2010 clivia 1 Comments

So yeah. Miami Broward Carnival is launching..FINALLY!!
WHO: Miami/Broward One Carnival
WHAT: Launch Miami Broward One Carnival Launch come support
WHERE: Calder Race Track- 8PM-4AM
WHEN: August 28 at 11:00pm - August 29 at 4:00am
Over 30 costumes on display
Live performance by Kaushun Band
Music by DJ Karl, Dynasty Int, Gary Enforcement, Mixx Master Roderick, Maestro

More importantly, the carnival will not be in B-Centennial park..but at Dolphin Stadium. A Stadium. Again. It seems like this festival is constantly taking a step back. I don't claim to know about the internal workings of the committee and I'm sure that the recession and economic status has affected budgets with them too. But a stadium carnival brings limitations. What will the rules be on liquor consumption? How do you try to recreate the road element that has been integral to the Miami Carnival parade? I'm trying to be positive about this turn of events....but I really watching this play out with a side-eye.

How are they going to handle crowd control in an even more enclosed place? Refuse entry? Yeah I know its a stadium...but this just feels like a show versus the street parade that is the essence of carnival. I guess we gonna see how it goes. I for one am really disappointed...but being cheerfully optimistic

ENDORSED EVENT! - Oasis Labor Day Weekend

Thursday, August 12, 2010 clivia 0 Comments

You know I don't vouch for anything unless I can personally say I enjoyed it. And even though I try to share information on this blog, I try VERY carefully to not give opinions on things, choosing rather to have people give their own input.
I can't do that with this one. And is not cause SIXAXIS is my people...yeah I might be biased.
But people, this party....this party hasn't failed me once.
Cooler fete, at a beautiful venue. Once you say cooler fete, you know the stoosh gone out the door. You liming with your people, you're drinking your drink of choice, you choose your company cause you bringing them with you.
The Music on point...what else could you possible ask for? so GO! Get your tickets early. Its worth it. They have food on sale...my advice is prepare your stomach before you get there. We trinis are the best in this kinda lime. This is a party of Legendary enjoyment. Plus part proceeds go to the Susan G. Comen Foundation for the Cure. A Party With A Cause. Dont't Miss It!

Hey yall

Saturday, July 17, 2010 clivia 0 Comments

So the truth. Two launches have passed since my last posting. And the reason why i haven't updated you, is unfortunately in true Bacchanalist style, the launches for Wassi Ones    and One Island Body Paint - Return of the Avatar were on the same night in venues too far away to make both of them.

SOO Iset up a contingency plan. My friend Will owner of the D-Junction would take pics at Wassi and I would do One Island at Naked.

So I get there at one. Models were scheduled to be on stage at 2..and I walk into the venue. The crowd at Naked was especially thick that night as two of the rooms that would normally allow for a smooth flow of people were shut down . One for a private party and the other for the dressing and staging of the models.

This was a bad sign. As I walked past the room where the models were getting painted...you could see through the partially covered french doors of the room that a photo shoot was underway. I guess i understand the need for privacy in terms of body paint since some of the models were  only partially clothed.

I had hoped that both Chatty Patty and I ..would have been able to be let in at some point to take pictures, but since we couldn't find any of our contacts that was a FAIL.

I think it would have been a great ploy to have the painted models displayed through those same French doors as people walked in. - a safe way to display partially clothed models...but I guess time didn't allow for that kinda creative set up.

Finally after sulking in my Guinness and complaining to Patty...lol....we realized that the only photographers let into the room were ones affiliated with the promotion/party...so my plan was to get as close to the stage as possible as early as possible to get the pics that i needed.

Another Fail.

That room was so crowded, so congested, the stage protruded into the crowd but there was no vantage point to get any pictures that would accurately display the costumes...I was soooo dissapointed. Steups.

Anyways...here are some pics that I was able to find from various sources of the One Island Band avatar - Return to the road.

One Island Band Avatar - Return to the Road
More Pics Here

Hmmm...doesnt this look familiar????

When I finally got to speak to Will about the Wassi Ones launch, and to other sources...it seems that the exact opposite was the case at that venue. The crowd was smaller, less hype but the opportunity for great pictures presented itself.
