We here in Florida are gearing up for Issac and his possibilities so a lot of our activities are postponed this weekend. Party Room Squad has their launch tonight at the playwright.


 Our friends in New York are gearing up for their Miami One Carnival activites.


Natural Freaks are launching their "RIO" presentation tonight at the corner of Ralph Ave D & Clarendon at "The Triangle". Doors open at 7pm and presentation at 10pm.

Fusion Karnival is also launching in NY tonight at the Denim Lounge - 1223 Bedford Ave

My top picks

Most people that know me know that I am NOT a picky costume chooser. It doesn't take much to please me with a costume. I am not a big fan of headpieces. It would have to be spectacular looking for me to say I am keeping that on all day. I love a decorated bra and a thin belt. Arm pieces are optional. I like to see feathers, on other people. Lol. So these picks are costumes that I like based on my own preferences of "not too much fuss". You may see a few with fuss that I like, but in real life I know I won't wear half of the things.

So in no specific order:

GenX's Hurricane FL or Section Leader:

Surprisingly I like the headpiece and the detail of the bra. This on the road with the sunlight is going to be amazing!!

Carnival Nationz Miami - Carib Empires

Now this is my kind of costume. There is not much of anything but the headpiece which is dramatic yet simple in the same breathe. The colours on this is A-mazing!!

China Mas - Trini is Heaven (what a name)


Again I am a minimalist. But I do really love the detail on the bra and belt.

Euphoria Mas - Rebirth (minus the headpiece)






Carnival Nationz - Mayan Backline & FrontLine


I would wear the headpiece on this costume all day!! I the detail on the whole piece I also love. Don't like tassels but would put that aside for this costume.

Euphoria Mas - Envy

There's not much on this costume, but I really like the shade of green used. And the head piece with the horn stood out for me.

Ramajay Mas with One Island - Empower

Luv this for me. Minimal but with some drama on the legs. The headpiece is not too much so I would wear it for the day.


Honourable mention

Ascension Mas - Africana Backline

I seem to have a love/hate relationship with this costume. If I look at it too hard I don't like it anymore.

For a while I have been a bit confused as to where I can go to get official information on Miami Broward Carnival. Official information on bands, carnival information etc was basically found and distributed by band leaders, promoters, he say she say. Most times you couldnt find any official official information as readily as you would like.

I found Miami Carnival on facebook with 4000+ likes www.facebook.com/#!/carnivalmiami and a website: www.miamicarnival.net.

Theeeen I found Miami Broward Carnival with a facebook page, that is harder to come up in a search, with 700+ likes www.facebook.com/#!/MiamiBrowardOneCarnival. They also have a website: http://www.miamibrowardcarnival.com/

Amidst my confusion I decided to take it to twitter to ask which one was really the official page. (Both websites - up to last week - did not have any up to date information). This exchange made me giggle.








But now www.miamibrowardcarnival.com is up to date and has a full listing of bands for 2012 and their themes, list of steel bands, list of the one board member, you can buy tickets for the actual carnival event, press releases, pictures from last year, forms for vendors etc. So I suppose that this is the official site.






What I don't understand though is why is there another website claiming to be official? I understand that this may have been the site before there was ONE carnival but why then is this still running and if is still running why not as a subsidiary?

Updated - Mas Bands listing

We are less than 60 days away from Miami Broward One Carnival 2012. I would assume by now all bands partaking in this years celebration would be registered. And therefore it would be safe to also assume that MBOC would have an updated listing on their site of all participating bands and their contact information. Well they don't and neither does Miami Carnival (www.miamicarnival.net). Can someone tell me why both these sites seem to be fighting to be the official page? But that's another post.

By the official launch on August 26th, I would hope that the updated listing would be up on MBOC's website. I hope!

Bajan fuh Eva - The Nature of Barbados

So the Bajan band "Bajan fuh Eva" is already registering for their 2012 theme "The Nature of Barbados". Founded in 2010 to promote cultural society, Bajan Fuh Eva is a band geared towards highlighting Barbados in a positive light.

They are offering four sections:

Female costumes are costing $175 and male costumes are $150. There are frontline options which will obviously cost more but you would have to contact the band for additional costing.
