Organic reactions - Soca Classics

Friday, December 14, 2007 clivia 6 Comments

That's all I can call it...
An Organic reaction...
When you're a soca lover....and maybe this is just because I am a Born Trinidadian...
Some songs produce a physical reaction in you ...sometimes without you being aware of it..
Im sure that music in GENERAL does that to everyone...
it produces a physical response...
But..
Maybe it's just me..
and feel free to refer to the disclaimer on my page...

I notice that most times its a Lavway...lol... that pace..you know??
Not too fast ..not too slow...
But something in the Chords..
In the song structure...[hmm...most of them have a minor key in it??]
Or a transition into a bridge ...
Must talk to spiritual advisor about that....

But I know....
I KNOW..
that there are songs...Calypso/Soca/Kaiso....
that produce an organic reaction in me...
ORGANIC...
my eyes water...
my taste buds wake up...
and I have to swallow...
the hairs on the back of my neck standup...
my arm pits tingle...
i tighten my stomach...and um other muscles..[the uhm...urine control ones??? BWAHAHAHAHAH]
I have this flight urge....or maybe it's a run urge???
Cause I need space...
I feel like i should be running...or moving ...or going somewhere..
Most times I end up jus running in circles...but the URGE Is there...

I would imagine that my facial expression is hilarious..
Because I want to tell somebody.....

do you Hear that??
do you? ..do you?
..do you feel that too?
It's in my chest... can you feel that too?
Am I crazy??
It's doing something to my body?
Should I worry?
I can't worry??
What if it breaks me??
Something's happening?
I don't know what it is...
Do I laugh?? Or Cry?? or Scream??
I'm Crazy right?
Oh Gorm it happening...
allyuh,....it happening...
and then...

I Swear..[Thanks Soca 919]

Wednesday, December 05, 2007 clivia 1 Comments

Listening to Soca 919 while at work..kinda lulls me into this calm, pleasant state.
I think its cause I hear these voices that sound like mine...
Instead of the Yankee nasal that I hear constantly...
I feel completely surrounded by it..and I hope my co-workers can understand me for the rest of the day!!
HAHAHA....
usually when I'm around my people i go "ISLAND" on them...and I have to repeat everything..

It reminds me of those saturday mornings I spoke about before...

I realized this morning that I'm working quietly with a half smile...
Cause I feel like I'm home...
Everybody sounding like my cousin...or my mother...
sigh..
Simple things..
Thanks Soca 919

Ey Sweetness.....Simple Things that Make Me happy..

Friday, November 30, 2007 clivia 5 Comments

A Doubles, at the perfect temperature, with the correct amount of pepper with the accurate consistency,
A Random heckle from an anonymous stranger.."Ey Sweetness.." and that's all...no more harassment...no more words...just a smile...

That moment right after you sip your first cup of coffee on a Monday morning..

Jeans that fit both my hips and my waist...

A psychic phone call from my mother at just that moment when i Missed her or needed her or was sick...or hungry...

Finding 20.00 in my back jeans pockets just when I was about to overturn the couch for coins ...

That smell in the nape of a man's neck that is just his own...combination of warm, and cologne...and MAN...

Feeling SEXY in your own skin...just cause

Sunday afternoons with a glass of Merlot and a clean house and a good book...

Sitting in the Macdonald's parking lot with my sister, eating a greasy sandwich BEFORE we drive so that we can both eat instead of one eating and driving...BEFORE we go shop like we're Paris Hilton.

My Hip Hop Questions... or Talib Sexy Man Kweli

Sunday, November 18, 2007 clivia 1 Comments

Talib "Sexy Man" Kweli - In the Mood

Don't mind me...I know I'm a Trini...i.e Soca Lover...but i listen to all genres...and these are a few observations on Hip Hop...lol...indulge me..[I not going to Trinidad for carnival...lol..so my interests diverted...]

1. What do we have to do to make Lauryn Hill Happy and hopeful and optimistic without messing with her brilliance and eloquence and talent and energy?? I just want her whole. I think we need her in this life. I pray for her. My heart reaches out to her when I see her perform before and hear her speak now. I’m sure she’s searching for her personal truth but GODDAMN WHY THE HELL IS IT TAKING SO LONG??? The silence she’s created is DEAFENING. It’s almost a scream. I miss her. Come back to us. We need you.

2 Can Little Kim please stop the surgery? I’m afraid for her. She used to be such a pretty chocolate thing? You think it’s addictive? I love her energy and spunk. I don’t judge her antics, her stunts her words. In fact I admire her….but dammit the heifer is scary..

3. Is it just me or do people just not realize the brilliance of Talib Kweli? Or Common? Or Lupe Fiasco? Or Mos Def? Or Kanye? YEAH KANNYE?? The man is cocky yeah…but Cocky never killed anybody and the man backs his shit up!! So how the hell is Hip Hop Dead?? HOW?? Jay-Z retired and came back? New artists are creating a fusion Genre…I don’t know what the hell to call it…but its rap riding Jazz influenced music like back in the Tribe called Quest days with REAL SINGERS doing hooks..and speaking Truth…neo soul is a backdrop to new Hip Hop..so how the hell…sigh…anyways…..so if that is NOT HIP HOP somebody tell me what the hell it is…

4. Is loving the style of Chrisette Michele? And the re-emergence of that timeless classic music? I’m tired of seeing hard hip hop ho’s. Glamour is back..THANK GOD!! Let talent speak not naked legs and breasts and you know…. I’m not hating or knocking anybody. I know sex sells…but Jill Scott in her splendor is so refreshing to me. I wanna strut too.. Like Kanye says the good life where the real girls look better than the models…haha..

5. Are people not seeing the influence of reggae in hip hop? Doesn’t Alicia Keys No one feel like a flash back to some Bob Marley classic? I haven’t placed it yet…but I will. And Akon’s Mama Africa? Sigh..am I too anal?? or too much time on my hands...

Saturday Morning Chores- Living Trini

Friday, November 16, 2007 clivia 2 Comments

Ok for those of us that grew up in Trinidad/Tobago..Saturday morning was always chores morning..
and for some blinking reason...your parents always had TONS of mahogany furniture that needed to be rubbed down with a soft cloth and Pledge oil..eventually the spray replaced it...thank god..

Intricate Lace Doilies, starched and sprayed into spectacular designs, had to be lifted and shaken , tables dusted and polished and then replaced. Crystal vases to spray and wash down with Windex, and Terazzo floors made broom clean.

In our house we had 2 cherry wood rocking chairs, a dining room table with six chairs, a drinks cart, a piano..YES I SAID A PIANO...sigh... a glass top breakfast table with stainless steel chairs with a wicker seat and a sleeper lounge to dust plus a whole living room to vacuum.

It never dawned on me that we had so much wood in our house till Saturday morning bright and early VAL - [the mommy only I CAN SAY THAT OKAY????] wake us up to do chores before we had to head to ballet class or tennis and pan and whatever else for the rest of the day.

Most times I would wake up early on my own so i could eat cereal and milk and watch Batman and Animaniacs [what happened to that show?? it was the BOMB] on the black and white tv in the kitchen...[that was daddy cricket tv- the screen was so small that if you exhaled your cheeks could block out the screen...but don't let cricket season be going on and that man couldn't watch his tv....haha..]

anyways...

The point of all of this is that at times you were just sooo upset that you had to allll of this stuff on saturday morning when cartoons was running and in reality it was the weekend...

But what happened instead...was..

AMAZING..

its still one of my favourite memories of childhood ever...

Mommy would put on the radio.

I cant remember the exact stations now ...and the hosts over time changed..

But what started as a chore turned into a

SOCA APPRECIATION SESSION...

you would be polishing away at the table ...and don't even realize ..that you were singing along to whatever new or old song was playing on the Radio. And this was before the time of the Radio MAFIA ..so we heard everything...oldies, chutney, pan...YES PAN!! on the radio.

Mommy and Renee and I would be doing a miscellaneous chores...and then Mommy would breakaway into the Pembroke dance..for the uninitiated..this is a low low wine down with your rear end cocked high in the air..and the arms moving in what could only be called a flailing of sorts..My Auntie Mau is also a pro at this one. we have all since learned this to a tee..especially since Mommy has been known to break into this dance..in THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET on occasion..one time on a shopping session in Trinidad for curtain fabric for Christmas...sigh..my mom is the best!!

It was a bonding experience...sometimes we would just follow her around doing whatever she did..
or we would critique the new songs coming...out..
and looooooord
what would happen if they play a vintage song like Merchant PROGRESS..or Caribbean connection
it was the bonding of one generation and another..
and to the tunes of DavidRudder High Mass
and Ras Shorty I and
Umbayaya Oh...oh oh oh oh...
and Andre Tanker..
and Sparrow ..
and Shadow Bassman..
and Lord Nelson, and Cro Cro..and Explainer...
and the Amazing DeFosfo himself...
and Tigress..and Singing Sandra...
and Black Stalin...
and Signal Hill Alumni Choir...

and explaining to mommy the themes of the new soca..

and then arguing about Machel mixing old school with new school..
you forgot about your chores...this was a bonding moment..

Chores forgotten
we danced together..
we re-discovered the old and accepted the new...
making up our own words when we didn't know them..[Mommy still doing this..I try and sing Fireball - What I want- and all i hear is go down co low-ka low-ka low-ka come up per high chi high chi...]

Saturday morning chores forgotten..
a tradition reinstated..
energy renewed
a memory reinforced..

living trini...forever

The Art of Being a Trini...

Thursday, November 15, 2007 clivia 2 Comments

Being Trinbagonian is an art form. I’m sure being from any Island Is. Here is some insight though into why being Trinidadian is such a difficult task unless you were BORN into it...Feel free to add more as you think of them
You refer to all salt crackers as "Crix".
You know the meaning of the word "Obzokie". ???
You go to parties for the food [well sometime…Friends I go for the Corn soup]... and the word free never quite had the same meaning.
Your recipe for making orange juice is plenty water, plenty sugar, plenty ice and only 2 orange... and Angostura bitters…
You say "Boy" at the beginning of a sentence and "man" or “Dread” at the end of it...and the words "Yes We" doesn't refer to any people, person or thing
"Priority" doesn't have anything to do with what you have to do right away.
You put ketchup and pepper sauce and Mustard on your pizza. Anchovies? Yuh losin' it or what?
Your cupboards are full of canned corned beef, Sardines, pepper sauce and red beans and baked beans ...and a dry coconut for the pelau.
You think steak is a waste of good meat. You rather cut it up and stew it with some potatoes instead ... or curry it and make roti.
You use your finger to measure the water when cooking rice.
You bring home food from a party.
You show disappointment by Steupsing, sucking on your teeth...and You can conjugate "ah steupse" by age four (three if yuh smart)
You call a soda a "sweet drink" and an Avocado, a "Zaboca". and you go to the shoprite clerk and ask them "whe allyuh have de Breeze?" meaning "where is the laundry detergent?".
You say "Whappenin" even at a funeral…
You tell the host "Good Night" when you arrive at someone's home in the evening.
When someone pays you a compliment, you say "Doh mamaguy meh". When someone sympathises with you, you comment "Yuh think it easy?".
You refer to all sweet coloured juice as "Kool-Aid".
You call a quarter a "schilling" when this really means 24 cents.
You know that using "Blue" makes white clothes whiter.
Just because something is called a "bake" you don't assume that it indicates the way it was cooked.
You know that a Washy-kong bears no relationship to King Kong.
You know about straightening, pressing, S-curls and Gherri curls regardless of your ethnic background.
You have cancelled plans because of rain even when you're going to be indoors. Rain is also a legitimate reason to miss work.
All vaccinations are called injections. All dish washing detergents are called "Squezy".
You know of at least one person who wakes up at 4am to LISTEN to cricket from Australia / New Zealand on the RADIO.
On at least one occasion you have: been told that you have a cold in some part of your anatomy other than your head or chest and/or had a virus named after something popular with the times eg. Bionic, Ninja, the hijab and the sting.
Despite lack of interest, someone has tried to convince you of the benefits of taking a purge, or becoming a born again.
You can feel cold when it's 25° C.
You pronounce words in plural, even though it's meant to be singular, eg."gimme ah COKES" or "ah GRAPES".
You say "FLIM" (film), "AXE" (ask) or "PITIAH"(picture), "STATELLITE" (satellite), "CUTLASH" (cutlass). Maybe USED to say….or know somebody who still does.
You know what "Wukking a 10-days" is, and know darn well it's going to take much longer than 10 days.
You know the meaning of several indian words, eg. "dahl", "bahgee", "channa", "bharra", "chunkae", "bowgee" and use them in every day language and actually believe them to be the correct English terms. .
You know that a lime is not necessarily a fruit.
You call any 'older' woman "Tantie" and any 'older' man "Uncle", regardless of whether or not they are related to you or even know you.
You could sing an entire Parang song in Spanish word for word, but don't speak or understand a word of Spanish.
When in doubt of how to prepare something to eat ... CURRY is the always the solution. You know Trinis will curry any and everything (not just meat) even mango, fish, conch, chataigne, etc...
You can call your fellow "countryman" by an ethnic name and it would be ok,eg.chinee-man, creole, dougs, or pyol

On to Friday-Black and White/Socavivor

Tuesday, October 16, 2007 clivia 2 Comments

So After Tribe Party...Bagogyul the Solider and CARA head out to Rise and Shine..
LOOORD...i wanted to go...but i had some Band responsibilities...
but
always the optimist..the girl dress like she WOULD be there on the possibilty that i would make it.

So.. i head out early in the morning...Going to pick up some additional feathers and stuff...but I had a lunch time committment with MIss Kizzy Vibrations to sort out the last of the costumes..
Got distracted for a minute though cause I had to head to the airport to pick up a relative that was coming in...So...the person aint show.
I stand up in the airport for over an hour...and finally decided to head out back to my car...
who i see pull up in the airport ..

Marlos and Les..

Apparently they were there to pick up my cousin Sophia who had just come in for the carnival. so after some hugs in the street to the distress of the Sherriff, and a plan to meet up at LC's Roti shop later, we all headed out.

Got to the mas camp, and doing the last distributions ....only to find out that one...some headpieces needed some radical make overs, and two we needed some last minute touch ups on some of the other pieces of the costume.

The plan was I would take the Peacock headpieces and do the additions myself...and then meet up with Dania and them at Sybil's for distribution. But by the time we finished we were just able to head to Sybils's to meet up with masqueraders for distribution. Tired.

The vibes there was nice. Rhythm International guys was there showing love, Walshy Fire and unknown till now masqueraders were already there waiting. I was so tired by this time that I knew I had to go home and rest. Bagogyal met me over there, and thank god Marlon brought me some doubles from LC. Now that I think about it that was the first thing i had to eat that whole DAY?? Tired.

anyways...the plan for the night was Black and White first and then Socavivor..

So Dania and I head out about midnight. Tickets in hand and Les and Marlon was to meet us there.

Mind you..we had been running around making sure we had our tickets for the event. After getting lost TWICE we finally get to black and white...and we bounce up Marlos and Les parked around the corner. We had their tickets so we kept driving around in the area to get a closer parking spot.

People..

EVEN with all tickets being sold in advance...there was a line wrapped around the building and growing longer as we waited. I'm talking about a TWO hour wait line. In fact , some friends who decided to brave the line said they were in fact in the line for almost an hour and half....waiting to get in..WITH ADVANCE TICKETS!!

HELL NAH.

So Bago and i did as most Trickydadians do..hahah [Nicole I know you gonna like that]

We SOLD the blasted tickets to some people outside...drive round the corner to find Marlon and them ...and headed to SocaVivor.

Oh to be smart and Trinidadian...hahahah

We ain't even bother to ask Marlon and them what they wanted to do..we sold their tickets too...hahaha...and it was off to Bayside Hut.

I must digress for a second to explain...that Miss Bago and I...had a quick wardrobe change in the car on the way to Socavicor. I mean COMPLETE change..one minute we all bashy for Black and white....and while we rolling on the Rickenbacker, changed to shorts and heels...complete with earrings and accessories. SOLDIERS!!! God I love Carnival.

Anyways we go over the bridge on Rickebacker and all we see is......

LINE.

Traffic for days. I thought there was an accident or something. But apparently...the police was directing the traffic to the parking lots. You were not allowed to do a left turn on the normal entrance to Bayside Hut. You had to drive all the way up Past the hut and then parking in the designated areas.

But what was HOT!! ...is that they had SHUTTLES. Yes i said SHUTTLES...so that after you parked your car, you walked out to the shuttle area and they dropped you to the staging/ticket areas.

Bago and I park easy easy...nice spot down in the light...advised the security fellas to watch the car...and walked out and took our shuttle to the ticketing areas. The line wasn't long and we had to jus go to the will call trailer and get out tickets and then go inside.

I love that Set up.

Unfortunately i had a mess up with the tickets for Marlon and they and they had to go purchase their tickets then.. I think was SIXTY dollars...jeesum piece....but they were soon inside behind us. AND GET THIS..they CHANGE IN THE CAR TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

TSB sets up the hut like a little village, booths for food and flags and paraphernalia. The Hut itself is set up like a running disco and over on the other side by the boats, they built a sound stage where the artists perform right alongside the Bar on the left.

This was a CASH bar!! HALLELUJAH! No blasted buy a chit and get a drink...i love that..

Soon we set up nice under a tree in the back.

Breeze blowing nice, right by the corner of the bar..and the vertically challenged one has a nice direct line to see the stage...

Everybody pass through that little area too..so it was a real nice vantage point...

Bago decided it was time to get something to eat so we went to this vendor for Bake and shark and salt fish...OH MY GOD...talk about delicious... a piece fall on the ground and I nearly had a heart attack. Thank god for trini food.

Anyways back to my little area...around this time now..Les and her family came and met us there and we ended up with a nice little lime.

Right around the corner too a ton of Bago people...this was a real Bago weekend.

The vibes was nice for the party...drinks in hand ..company nice..
then BAM

RAIN...and not no cooling rain...Rain that mash up the tents over on the other side...and turn the floor into a swamp

Me and Bago get lucky.... we run for the tent with the drinks..and got inside early so that the outside people well block the DELUGE that came down. Mr Joseph play body guard whole night...so a sister was well dry..Thank you darlin..

TWICE this deluge happen..and about four o clock ...while the rain now easing up...who we see walking in..

JESUS HIMSELF!! THE BOY! THE BOY!!
with Patrice Roberts and others in tow..

But guess what... I Was too tired to care..
Fall over if you want to...i know some people fainting right now...my carnival was all planned around the BOY..
But the honest to god truth was..
I was too TIRED AND COLD AND DRENCHED to care..

Me and Bago said Bye to the others who we found out stayed well into the morning and headed home.

Socavivor...

4 STARS....but we coming back

Miami Carnival 2007 Review - Tribe Ignite!

Wednesday, October 10, 2007 clivia 3 Comments

So i figured the best thing to do would be do it in stages.

First Night. Tribe-Ignite. THURSDAY

We decided to go to to the Tribe party instead of Girl Power. I not gonna get into the reasons why.hahah. Those who KNOW....KNOW!! And those who dont...GUESS!!

Anyways.
Cousin Bago came in about 11..so I decided to wait on her before I headed out.

My other friends got down there real early ...and they scared me because when they first got there they were saying." Cliv nobody here...we waiting in our car to go inside."
Talk about shell shocked !!

The same people that were throwing this party has had some mas issues before so EVERYBODY was kinda worried about whether the party would come off or not.

Anyways. On to the fete...
Cousin reach...and we had to meet up with Marlos from home, and Cara from Brooklyn so the convoy now dubbed Carnival Soldiers would go to Big Fish ...

Anyways we meet up at a Gas a station half way.
Oh my look marlos...he so sweet ...met the Friend...Les [the bald head rasta]...and we out.

Got to big Fish say 1:30 which on a usual night is PERFECT TIME to get there...

I had the sense though to call my Friend who works the door to make sure things set up.

So The convoy heads down to BF....and we looking for parking..

Me and Bago drive past the entrance...and what we see..is TRIBE banner on the wall
And this gorgeous red fabric hanging down , rippling in the breeze over the usual entrance for Big Fish...the two of us alone in the car SCREAMING...Oh GEEEED [non trinidadians i sorry...this is an exclamation term of surprise, disgust, or shock]....it's BEAUTIFUL ....HYPE FOR DAYS!!

Mind you the other two friends already inside...We got lucky to park too. The guy manning the parking lot remebered me from my usual visits to big fish..and gives us parking on the side walk OUTSIDE the fete...Nice so when we ready to leave things nice...

Gone inside...my friend "Nickie Nix by the door.she so sweet...I bought tickets...but the numbers increased over time and she ..well..is all love Nix...thank you..so we set.
TALK ABOUT A PARTY NICE!!

the place looked GORGEOUS...
it was almost NOT BIG FISH!!
Not too ram...space to move and chill and watch people...BEAUTIFUL people,....
Was like a who's who party...[which is what we loooove]
and we decide to set up in the back close to the bar.

Mr Marlos so sweet I don't think i paid for ONE drink....
and every time you turn around I was running into some Bago person...
Like the WHOLE of Tobago was there...[ dj Smallie, the Achille Boys, Dean Defreitas ...not bago but college friend], And then I found Miss Jazzy and the used to be jamaican crew...Dj hummingbird and Marls...and the rest of their people..I gave Marla a present ...but i think she threw it away. HAHAHAH.

Party NICE ...NICE NICE NICE NICE NICE...

Although we had some ...DRAMA..lol...I gonna leave that un-disclosed for the people involved...especially since Debra the WAR Monger was barefoot walking in the road ready to kill somebody...hahahahahah

But LOOOOORD party nice..

Bago and all get tipsy..drinks was strong Like Hell...
I know Marlos has pics...
So when I get them I gonna
add them as an album.
Sister bloggers if allyou have pics...send on ill add them...

RATING... 5 STAR

We goh see allyuh next year!!

Tuesday, October 09, 2007 clivia 0 Comments

Fort Lauderdale police overreacted when they called for emergency backup to control crowds at the Broward Caribbean Carnival, event organizers said Monday.

Andy Ansola, president of the organization, said the response Sunday shows how unaccustomed Fort Lauderdale officers are to Caribbean cultural events and signals a need for sensitivity training.

"You have to understand the mind-set of the people," Ansola said. "The people are just there to have a good time. They're not there to create a riot. They're just there to release and be free."

Police said hundreds tried to push their way through a gate in the 5300 block of Northwest 12th Avenue. The emergency call about 6 p.m. almost brought all on-duty officers to the site, but police canceled it once a special unit with crowd control expertise calmed things down.

The incident marks the latest controversy to plague the carnival, held Sunday at the Fort Lauderdale Stadium, where police estimated 20,000 people attended. The event has grown so large that organizers have had difficulty finding a site to accommodate it.

Carnival treasurer John Beckford said the organization paid the city of Fort Lauderdale about $36,000 for police, fire and Emergency Medical Services and spent $20,000 to hire two security companies.

Despite the security presence, police defended the emergency call. It occurred during one of the day's few trouble spots.

"It's a shame that one incident happened, because they were well-behaved," Sgt. Frank Sousa said of the crowd. "Everybody else was nice. We told them to do something, they listened. They were there to have a good time, that's all they wanted to do."

"The bottom line is we're in control, they're not," Sousa said. "That's why we called in the troops."

Ansola said the incident occurred when masquerade bands were going through a special entrance. He said one band alone had 400 people, and police only allowed people into the stadium one at a time.

"The way police were doing it, it sort of aggravated the crowd," he said. "They were sending them in single file, and it wasn't going to work. It got out of hand. People started pushing, and the barrier came down. But it was quickly put back up, and that was the end of the story."

Ansola plans to meet with police officials to suggest they send some officers for training in Trinidad and Tobago, where carnival is king. He said police in New York and Canada have taken that approach.

Sousa said that would not be necessary. "In a perfect world, maybe that would be great," he said. "But we're a professional department. We've worked several large events. I don't think it has anything to do with culture."

Carnival organizers have been trying to find a permanent home for the festival, known for its uninhibited revelry. They said this year's event was successful. But after paying twice the amount for security and trash pickup than in previous years at the city's request, Beckford was disappointed by some of the logistics.

Beckford said he didn't understand why emergency backup was necessary with more than 60 officers on site. He also wanted an explanation for why the fire marshal stopped patrons from entering the stadium at 7:30 p.m. when it was scheduled to end at 11 p.m., allowing organizers to sell only 13,000 of the 20,000 printed tickets.

Ansola said the carnival lost $120,000 as a result.

"We met all of their demands, paid a lot of money, and here it is we have to be begging them to stay open so we can meet our obligations," he said.

Sousa said people were allowed to come all night.

But Arnel Anthony, a bandleader, said his 100-member masquerade band reached the gate at about 6:10 p.m. and police escorted them off the premises.

"We had no choice but to move," said Anthony, who said the group paid $5,000 to participate but wasn't allowed in the venue. "We should be compensated."

Last month, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission agreed to host the carnival at the stadium just weeks before the event and after it had been rejected by the city of Miramar.

Commissioner Christine Teel, whose district includes the stadium, said she heard reports that police were concerned about the number of people. She doesn't support the event coming back next year.

"It was bound to happen because there were just so many people," said Teel, who was opposed to hosting the event. "This isn't any surprise because it's what happened the last couple years."

Staff Writer Brittany Wallman contributed to this report. Alva James-Johnson can be reached at ajjohnson@sun-sentinel.com or 954-356-4546.

Silence...SUCKS [Into The West]

Wednesday, October 03, 2007 clivia 3 Comments

sigh..

This blog been brewing for days now. To be honest a sister was torn between being politically correct and just...well...being real. Miami Carnival is always politics...and I try not to stir the pot too much.

Bago...you know what I'm talking about....is like Island Mix back board...nothing saying up front ...but the PM's busy like Noah on Flood Day!

Well allyuh sure as hell know by know that IE is not on the road for Miami Carnival. I'm devastated.

I remember at their launch though i was so proud of them too...plus that Saloon Girls Costumes rocked me. We were almost Saloon Girls.

In the end, Clivia the Artist's Interests [ my alter ego] won out. I wasn't playing with them, but personally I consider them my friends, and I wanted to see them do Well.

I'm not gonna speculate [well publicly at least] on the reasons...cause we all know Carnival is Bacchaanal...and to be honest not going on the road is a Producer's NIGHTMARE that I can associate with PERSONALLY!!! I been there....

Let me Say it too. My Section Last Year GREAT BARRIER REEF With GENERATION X NEVER TOUCHED THE ROAD!!!. and if you're Pisces like me...its all YOUR fault, no committee , no group..no nothing..
YOUfailed. So I'm not gonna speak on that.

What I am gonna speak on...PC or not...is that by Now a STATEMENT should have been made about the band.

It's a Matter of Credibility I think.

The worst possible outcome has happened at the worst possible time. TRUE.

The reality is that disgruntled masqueraders, despite getting their deposits back or not, will talk. We are TRINIDADIANS!! We talk period!! And what we don't know the truth about, WE WILL MAKE UP!! You know we can carry a grudge forever, especially about MAS!! You know they make noise ...just for fun ....just to see how you will react.

You guys have a purpose and plan for Mas in Florida...I know...cause I Know You. And this feel like real CACA right now....
But I think a statement should be made to the public in general. I'm not saying tell us exactly what happened. Thats allyuh business. Shit happens....sometimes at the worse possible time.

But there is life and MAS after this...and an attempt at restitution should be LOUD and CLEAR.

It not gonna fix the situation, fallout will still occur, but it speaks towards the perception of your integrity as an entity. Silence SUCKS!!!

Speak please.

Inspirational Post of the Day - Energy or...Don't Hold On to Doo Doo

Thursday, September 27, 2007 clivia 0 Comments

"Energy is neither created or destroyed but Changes from one Form to Another"

The Argument exists that we are all products of our environment. I believe it has an effect on us yes, but I don't think it completely defines who we are. A person is Much More than its Environment.

However a lot can be said about the people we surround ourselves with. Make sure the people you keep around have the same goals you do. I'm not saying go to the extremes of cutting and dicing your associations cause they don't match yours, but make sure the people you keep around you:

Share Your Energy level..
Your Ambitions,
Your Ethics...
Your Work Ethic,
Have the Ability to make Hard decisions in a Crunch..
Have the same resolve you do..
Accept Your Differences,
Know your Flaws But LOVE you Anyway...
CAN SINCERELY and EASILY Apologize when they Hurt you ...
and RESPECT your EFFORT and TIME and TALENTS...not EXPLOIT IT!!

Like a Radio Host said last Night...I SWEAR she was talking STRAIGHT AT Me...she might as well have called my Name out..

If your crew is Dizzy...and they not acting Right ....They need to get LEFT!!!"

Simple HUH? I added my own:

If you have to change your friends name to Croissant ...cause they so damn FLAKY...Let Them Go..

If you shake your head when you see the number show up on your Caller ID ..Delete it..

And surround yourself with energy that:

Moves you...
Inspires you to Grow and Learn and TRY!!
Energy that will EBB when your's is WANING..
A BRACE when yours is FALTERING..
A COVER when yours has FAILED YOU..
and a HALO when JOY Finds YOU!!

Don't Hold on to DOO DOO ...just makes you DIRTY AND STINKY TOOO

Miami Carnival Fete Guest List ettiquette

Wednesday, September 26, 2007 clivia 2 Comments

So of course, we're down to crunch time.
Hopefully if you planned right, your tickets were bought in advance...cause they will RAPE you at the door!!

But if you've done like me, and made a blinking spreadsheet of the events you're going to attend, the advance ticket price...[cause it cheaper] and paid for these things in advance, you have a certain calm at this point.

Cause costume paid for, tickets in strong box...outfits planned....all you have to worry about now is Accessories, Style Issues, and drinking money,[ sometimes not even that if you have an all inclusive planned in].

Unfortunately I have some friends, who didn't listen to my sage advice about advance purchasing of tickets....and now they STRESSING and trying to STRESS me in the process.

STEUPS. Did I not email this spreadsheet to everybody?? Did I not explain the advantages of upfront purchasing??

THEN you have the gall to ask me to do a HOOK UP FOR YOU???!!???!!

LET ME EXPLAIN SOMETHING...granted, in all honesty, the events that I'm going to this weekend are ...hmm...shit ...ALL being hosted by people I know and have worked with at some point or other. In fact at one, if not 3 of the events, my money has no value in terms of admissions on a REGULAR BASIS....So of course if I pushed the issue i may be comped for entry.

But I know... that MIAMI CARNIVAL WEEKEND ALL BETS ARE OFF!!

Crowds bigger, potential for Profit is HUMONGOUS...people who relaxed at the door on a monthly basis cause is FAMILY coming through the door don't give a rat's ass if Clivia been standing at the gate for 40 minutes, because the regular girl who works the door when the crowd average been replaces by a cranky Aunty that they ask to help with the massive increase in numbers and when SHE don't KNOW YOU...she don't KNOW YOU!!

Why you run the risk of putting yourself in a position where people either laughing at you cause you walk up Big and Bold and yelling those famous words....."I'm on the list"..then stand up there for an hour while they ignore you and let other people in...while security keep telling ..you ..PAY OR LEAVE!!! PAY OR LEAVE!!! and then finally sheep facedly STILL have to pay your money to get inside..

NON VIP of course....and then instead of enjoying your night..you stand up looking for the promoter whole night to get UPGRADED to vip or worse you stand up in a loud ass party with music playing and you calling the promoter on his cell. ...IN THAT NOISE!! ON THAT NIGHT!!

I personally have been known to turn my phone off in the middle of a large event cause what matters THEN is only the people who could tap you on your shoulder and tell you something...

Anyways as I was saying...

To avoid all of that drama..

I BUY my tickets ...in advance, VIP if available...and if i didn't and I happen to see the Promoter while I'm there...if he is really YOUR FRIEND...lol...like people on the VIP list always profess...they'll upgrade you themselves.

Look at it like this...if they have been good to you all year in terms of free entry and service, this ONE time...you can afford to PAY them their due...

Show them you appreciate THEM this time...Buy A Ticket!!

Miami Carnival 2007 Masquerader Check List

Wednesday, September 19, 2007 clivia 1 Comments

Okay so the Parade starts at NOON!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH!!

okay okay lets start over...

The Parade is SUPPOSED to start At noon.
Based on my experiences wtih this route this is my advice.

Do not park your car at the beginning of the route.

Right then your hype and full of energy so you good. Imagine after you jumping, and drinking and eating...and the adrenaline wear off...you now have to walk ALLLLLL the way back ...the ENTIRE ROUTE!! AGAIN...with your mash up gym boots and sore feet....[well unless you take a taxi] but you know what I mean.

Find the Sunblock..Miami Sun not easy...i buy the highest SPF I can and every year i turn into Chocolate Clivia right after...sigh..sun block
Sunglasses necessary..i know to find a place to put them sometimes is a drag ...but you will need them. Plus if you intend to run back and jump up with Natural Freaks some times all you pretty makeup does wash off...or if like some people you get kidnapped and put in a shopping basket and wheeled away unwillingly you sometimes return to your mas band covered in blue or brown mud...sunglasses make everything better.

Minimal supplies ...jus like Trinidad....Cash..you probably wont need it except for a Taxi back to your car...or..lol..sometimes if you park like a jackass and you get towed...hahaha....lip gloss, Tampon, wet wipe.

If the people give you a band...WEAR the blasted band...and don't give the band away to your cousin who not playing mas but you want them to get into the park. If you in costume...and you don't have on the MCI band....they don't care bout the MAS BAND band...your pretty costumed ass will be left outside the park. I HAVE SEEN IT!!! it's not pretty.

Closed Toe shoes. Nuff Said. If not...they fair game...simple
TRY TRY to reach for noon. *Straight face*. After the fete the night before...jus...doh sleep...cause even if you there by 1..and they ain't move off...the whole point is building your vibes...so TRY to reach for noon.

Don't cuss up the people that work in the drinks trunk. They busy. Is plenty people. PLUS we tipsy in hot sun...so just wait your turn or take two at a time. Please remember as in everything else ...pace yourself.

YES they have porto potties. NOOO this is not Trinidad so don't try to go round a corner and pee. Thats why the clean up bill does be so high for the carnivals. SO save the pee and protect your carnival venue!!!

Watch out for them Nasty Camera Men. The year of elation two weeks later we saw footage of some of our masqueraders who OBVIOUSLY were not aware that they were being Photographed LIKE THAT!! Some NASTY men go out there and only shoot for a CERTAIN THING! The reputable ones will be branded with who they are and where theyre From. So careful

Lastly....enjoy it...enjoy it...enjoy it...and then get ready for Las Lap the next Day

Bender Ball - Getting ready!

Sunday, September 16, 2007 clivia 6 Comments

Sooo your girl getting her things together for the Carnival festivities...

unlike some of allyou i don't have to worry about flight and hotel.

But I still hadda plan out the outfits so after I stumble into the house in the morning and hadda get ready for the next thing I aint wasting time trying to figure out what to wear.

On top of this I am on my carnival regimen...hahah...to at least TONE up to fit into my Peacock costume..which is a SKINNY waist band WITH a V...so you know the little lower belly bulge that women always trying to get rid of gonna be displayed...sigh..Don't blame me..blame the designer..hahahahah!! I digress.

SOOO in preparation for the carnival I ordered the Bender ball...a little green ball that looks like a child's beach ball that comes with a DVD of exercises.

After taking two weeks to get here...EACH day I checking the blinking mail box for the thing...it finally arrives.

In the box is the ball deflated with two straws and a plug for the hole in the top. So I'm thinking... Dais all?

Anyways I set up the schedule....if I wake up an hour earlier ,I could do my ball have a cup a coffee , get ready for work..and then do another half hour in the afternoon.

So finally I put in the dvd...apparently there are two sets of directions on the dvd.
One for abs, one for buns.

Leslie, the instructor starts off by giving instructions on how to blow up the ball.. DUHHH

I do that check..
and then they start with the tape.

Beginner's move.
The premise is this ball sits at the base of your spine ..so that while youre doing your ab workout, your stomach muscles are constantly engaged. Makes sense..

Beginner's exrcise...EASY PEASY...im like ok...i could do this...cool..

Mind you its boring music..and she does NOT have iron clad abs hmm?? And its not a set workout so you can put in the tape do your sets and done.

But so far so good.

Then I got to the 2nd level...where you lean your back further back so you a have a more intense angle to work the abs more.

FATHERLORD!!
Your girl was shaking like Vibrate on your cellphone.

I'm sure my neighbour thought something was wrong. By the third one where your working the obliques i was ACTIVELY SCREAMING!!

Lord pressure. The third level had me sweating...and SCREAMING...when I finished I was curled up in a ball like baby. But this crap works!! I could touch the muscles and feel the taughtness.

I've advanced now to setting up a thirty minute "BOY" playlist... so while "You" and "Miss Good Reputation" going...I do the exercises in the order I learned them.

So far so good.
very worth the 20.00!! And people are noticing the results ..all the better

Try it!!

Places to Check out In Miami

Sunday, September 16, 2007 clivia 0 Comments

Okay. so hotel paid for , costume down, tickets purchased forparties:
But you have to eat right???

here are some places I wanna recommend out side the typical Fast food fare:

  • Kidd's Island Bakery
    6305 Miramar Parkway Miramar, FL 33023-3943 (954) 963-6911
These people make a Bake and Buljol that will leave you standing up in a stupor. Currants Roll, Carib, Curry, Macaroni Pie, Aloe Pie, Curry Crab and Dumplin. You name it they have it. But believe me the locals apprecaite it as much as visitors. So do like we do. Call in and place your order for pick up or prepare to wait a little bit. At least though you could have a beer and listen to soca while you wait. Oh and I believe they sell tickets for the Carnival Events too.

  • Lc's Roti Shop
    19505 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33169 (305) 651-8924
LC is the owner of this roti shop and if you wanna feel like you went to the corner shop in Trinidad this is the place to be ..sit in or at the bar, and listen to her talk about everything from Carnival to ...anything else...she is the spice of this establishment. and the curry nice for days. Doubles, Alloo Pie and Pommecythere and Mango chow. It's the only place I can find oh lord i forget the name now...the chocolate bar with the wafers on the inside in a red and yellow striped wrapper. Father lord..why i can remember the name now...it starts with C. they used to have a commercial on tv for it with a boy with Alien ears...Tonnox basrs?? sigh...ill update when I remember.

NAILS, EYEBROWS AND INDIVIDUAL EYE TABBING??

Everybody wants the super deluxe lashes for Carnival. But if you don't have time to do it at home, they are at every corner in Florida. Feel safe to walk in and have them do a great job. I'm recommending this one because i use her religiously.

Nails By Jenny
733 NE 167th St
Miami, FL 33162
(305) 770-4436

Clothing/ACCESORIES

EVERYWHERE ON SOUTH BEACH!!
lol...but hit Aventura Mall, Or Pembroke Lakes for Party wear.
Downtown Miami is also the bomb for shoes and extra details to add to your costume..Feathers, Stones, Glitter

La Casa De Las Viejas

39 NE 1st St
Miami, FL 33132
